The Reverend Doctor James S. Cooper was born in Millhaven, Screven County, Georgia on September 26, 1947.  His secondary education was received in the public schools of Savannah, Georgia.  He hold a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy and Religion from Morris Brown College, Atlanta, Georgia; a Master of Divinity Degree in Psychology and Pastoral Care from Interdenominational Theological Center & Turner Theological Seminary, Atlanta, Georgia; a Master of Arts Degree in Religious Education from Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, New Jersey, Master of Military Science, Command General Staff College, a Two-Quarter Certificate of Clinical Pastoral Education, Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia; and a Doctor of Ministry from San Francisco Theological Seminary, San Anselmo, California.  He is an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and a member of Western Star Lodge #65 F&M Prince Hall Masonry.  He is a life member of the NAACP.

In January 1973, he received a direct appointment and was commissioned a Captain in the United States Army Chaplain Corps. His military education includes completion of the Chaplain Officer Basic and Advanced Courses of the United States Army Chaplain Center and School and the Command & General Staff College.  While serving in the US Army, he received the highest Peace Time Award (The Legion of Merit) among numerous other decorations, medals, awards, and ribbons.

He retried from active service in January 2003 after serving as Garrison Chaplain, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the largest installation in the US Army. He retired with the rank of Chaplain (Colonel) after 31 years of service to God and country.

He began preaching at the age of 13 years old.  He was ordained Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, November 21, 1966 in Douglas, Georgia.

He is married to the former Mirriam L. Roberts.  They have three (3) children: Lenton Douglas, James Simon II, Annette Evelyn Etheredge; ten (10) grandchildren: Shakita Lashaun Cooper, Lenton II, James III, Daniel Charles Etheredge, Carmeron Alexander Cooper, Kaelyn Marie Etheredge, Jamia Kaloni Simone Cooper, (twins) Nina Sloane, Ashton Michael Cooper, and Laila Yvonne Etheredge.
